Corduroy Suits 2010

The New Sexy Future of the Corduroy Suit
The glamorous fashions of the New York runways are shocking and dazzling. But as fashion’s biggest names send models past me, draped in their most beautiful clothing, I can’t help but sometimes feel skeptical. This season, corduroy suits seem to be making a comeback.

A couple years ago, Prada sent a model down the catwalk in a teal corduroy suit. The $1,855 suit is luxurious, and chic despite its bulky look and 70s throwback style (which seems to be popular in 2010 fashion as well). But it made a bit of a buzz in the fashion world and on the web. Maybe because the corduroy suit conjures up so many preconceptions that include visions of the seventies nerdy college professor, elbow patches, afros, pipes and beards. Alas, while Prada’s suit was met with a bit of skepticism when it was introduced, it appears that it may have been prescient, inspiring 2010′s line of high-end corduroy fashion.

This year’s suits are a bit different however. The suit’s new softened look and slim silhouette gives it a very modern street/hipster edge. The look remains familiar and classic. The new corduroy suit has been described as tailored preppy with an attitude. A preppiness that gives American suit companies J. Press and Brooks Brothers, companies practically synonymous with preppy, a run for their money.

Corduroy suits run the gamete in terms of pricing. Of course, the top labels such as Dolce and Gabbana, Prada and Burberry could easily set you back a few thousand dollars. But there are a number of equally handsome corduroy suits available from top retail brands that are more affordable. The most interesting, perhaps, might be the Open Ceremony/Levi Strauss 3 piece suite collaboration.

These new suits are absent of the old cliches. They are stylish streetwear for men with attitude. These new suits are paving a new path for the hot, sexy, and hip man… hominus hipus.
